Compliance over Speed in Sports Business: How You Can Protect Your Reputation

Raghuram Palaniappan

Compliance over speed in everything, especially Youth Sports Businesses.

As someone from Silicon Valley influenced by tech, venture capital, and entrepreneurship, speed is always emphasized here. Even with new technology and AI allowing people to ship ideas quickly, choose compliance.

In the youth sports industry, compliance is crucial. Parents trust your business with their children and you should never betray that faith. Here are a few things you should set up if your organization works with young children.

Compliance Checklist

Local & Federal Regulations
Understand the local and federal regulations around working with children and make sure all your business processes follow them. Educating your employees on these rules is mandatory.
Incident Reporting System
Have a built in reporting system for any incidents that occur during classes. Your employees should be trained to immediately document any situations that arise. You do not want parents reaching out saying their kid was hurt in a class and have no process in place.
Data Governance
Have strong data governance practices around customers and child data that you collect with consent of parents.
Waivers & Legal Documentation
Always have waivers and legal documentation set up for any service your business provides.
W-2 Coach Classification
Always keep coaches that you staff at locations on a W-2 and not a 1099. You do not want tax penalties for misclassification.

The businesses that will win now are ones people can trust to fulfill promises, protect their data, and move with integrity.
